FMU scholarship has been endowed
The William H. Breazeale, Jr. Chemistry and Physics Scholarship at Francis Marion University has
been endowed.
Breazeale was the chairman of FMU’s Department of Chemistry and Physics for 27 years.
Colleagues, friends, family and students of Breazeale established the scholarship in recognition of
his retirement in 1997. He was recently honored with a luncheon at FMU on Nov. 2. The
scholarship will be awarded to an FMU student majoring in chemistry or physics, with preference
given to a chemistry major. The recipient must have a classification of sophomore or higher and a
grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
Under Breazeale’s leadership, the chemistry department received approval from the American
Chemical Society in 1995. In 1985, he was named FMU’s Distinguished Professor, and was
named a professor emeritus in 2000. Breazeale teaches part-time at the College of Charleston. He
is a member of the Board of Trustees for the American Chemical Society member Insurance
program, chairman of the American Chemical Society National Chemistry Week Task Force and a
member of the Board of Directors of the Laboratory Safety Institute.
